Have you ever wondered what it would be like to carry the entire Wikipedia in your pocket? Of course you have been able to do so with a high speed data connections but offline access to databases of this type has its own advantages: It’s much faster than using your data connection (if you’re lucky enough to have one) and always available. We can think of hundreds of scenarios where offline access would come handy (when traveling, in meetings, underground train, plane). Fortunately for us, WikiPock have sorted this one out with their application-WikiPock, which brings offline access to Wikipedia for 5800ers and more.
Now if you have ever stopped by the encyclopaedia section in a library, you would know how gigantic encyclopedic databases can be, but WikiPock does an amazing job of compressing the entire Wiki collection to just around 4.7 GB, yeah that’s right- 4.7 GB! That’s a big chunk but worth every bit of info on it. What makes us say so? Find out after the break.
Before we dive into the review of this app, let’s throw some light on installing this application, for it’s not as straight forward as the ones available in Ovi store. The first step is obviously to buy a license of this application, following which you will be directed to a link from where you can download the application along with the necessary library files. Now, if you don’t have that many gigs of free memory on your microSD, you can order one with preloaded library files directly from WikiPock. Now that we have ticked the installation of the app, off our list, let’s move on to the review of this app.
The app as such has a very simple UI: just a search window is all that it boasts of and though it looks very basic, we must confess we are very much impressed with it. Searches are fast and though the developers have done away with images and videos, to keep the library file size small; the encyclopedia is pretty handy in its present form.
What we like?
- Simple but effective UI
- Hyperlinking is fast
- Random Page is a great tool to enrich your knowledge on-the-move
What we don’t like?
Oh well, WikiPock is such an amazing app that we still cannot get our hands off it even after playing with it for like a week now. We kept throwing random queries and it never disappointed us with its results. Apart from offline accessibility what we really like about this app is the amazing speed of response. With around 5 gigs of library files, we were expecting a sluggish performance but we couldn’t have been more wrong. Though, an option to connect to the web to access images and videos would have been better, we would definitely recommend this app for our readers.
WikiPock is available in 2 versions: Basic edition for USD 9.99 and Plus edition for USD 14.99. While the Basic version comes with no updates, Plus comes with one year of updates for libraries and is highly recommended. Further WikiPock is available in 22 languages covering European, American, African and Asian languages, making it a complete mobile encyclopedia tool for smartphone users.
