Nokia 5530 and 5230 to Eat into 5800 Market? Not Really!

Our beloved Nokia 5800 XpressMusic may be selling in bucketloads across the world, but looks like our friends at Espoo, Finland are not entirely happy about it.
Following up on closed heels of Nokia 5530, Nokia have recently announced yet another budget symbian fifth edition device in the form of Nokia 5230. Obviously they are no match to our 5800s, hit the jump button to see what makes us say that.
Nokia 5530 XpressMusic

Unveiled during Communic Asia 2009 in Singapore as a concluding part of the online game “Pass the Parcel”, Nokia took the world by surprise by announcing 5530, a stripped down version of 5800. As much as the new homescreen was delightful with its scrolling contacts bar and widgets, the absence of HSDPA left a gaping hole in the specifications window. Thats not the only thing we are complaining about, infact we have listed down as many as 5 obvious advantages our 5800 has over 5530:
-
Smaller screen (2.9″ compared to 3.2″ of 5800)
- Absence of 3G
- Lacks GPS hardware (Now that explains its all slim and sleek look)
- TV out cable, spare stylus and plectrum, carrying case are absent compared to the box contents of 5800
- Comes preloaded with a lower capacity memory card (4 GB compared to 8 GB of 5800) and a different headset model (sports silicone ear buds)
Priced at €199, 5530 definitely has an obvious price advantage over our 5800 but the compromises are rather too heavy in the hardware department.

The latest budget entry from Nokia is the Nokia 5230 which bears a striking resemblance to our beloved 5800 and at €149 is probably the most economical symbian fifth edition to be announced till this day. Unfortunately for non-5800ers all this cost-cutting has taken a heavy toll on the hardware specifications of this devices with Wi-Fi and carl zeiss optics being thrown straight out of the window. However HSDPA makes a reappearance for 3G lovers along with customizable rear panel to appeal to the fashion conscious teenagers on budget.
Check out this link for full specifications and comparison of the above two devices with our 5800. We are now gonna cherish our 5800 more than before.
Verdict
While its good to see that Nokia’s effort in bringing feature-rich handsets more affordable to the masses especially in the recent times of economic recession, we are not too convinced of the capability of these devices in comparison to our 5800s.
The widgetized homescreen and kinetic scrolling may be the only main features that the 5800 is missing at this stage but its just a software limitation which a firmware upgrade can fix anytime (which unfortunately has been eluding us since long). The hardware compromises in the above two models are way beyond our comfort zone and we are definitely sticking with our 5800 for long.
P.S- The latest navigation edition of 5800 will be retailing at €285 soon and is a much better deal than the above two for obvious reasons.
