fring your friends, mobile
Fring is a very popular social networking app for smartphones. It supports almost all the major services, namely, GTalk, Skype, Yahoo, MSN, Twitter, etc. I personally use this app for most of my chats.
As most of the other similar apps, this gives a single list of all the contacts from all the services you have subscribed to. I feel this is a good way of presentation. You can just select the person you want to chat with or call, and tap on the appropriate button on the bottom of the screen, which are call, chat and profile. The top of the screen shows the number of missed calls you have and the no of chat messages you have not read. Also, multiple tabs make it easy to navigate through different screens of the app.
You have the option of hiding the app. This makes the app go to the background and work invisible. You still get notifications when you get an IM or a call.
The call log tab shows a list of all the calls that you have dialled, missed or received through fring.
As I’ve mentioned earlier, fring supports many services. These are Skype, GTalk, MSN Live, Yahoo, Twitter, ICQ, SIP, AIM, WeFi and Last.fm. There is a small tick mark on all the services you have subscribed to. To subscribe or unsubscribe, just tap on it and you’ll get the options, or you can use the controls on the bottom of the screen.
Now, the twitter client on this is a bit confusing. In the contacts list, you can see two twitter accounts, one named “Twitter” and the “twitter”. Now the “Twitter” never works, at least on mine, or only on mine device, not sure about other devices. But it never worked on my device till now. It shows an error message the screenshot of which, I’ve put on later in the post. The other “twitter”, works as an IM in the app. So it opens up in a separate tab and pings you whenever somebody you follow tweets. Once your phone starts vibrating due to the notification, it’ll have no plans of stopping. It’s like somebody is IM-ing you continuously. You can tweet from the same window though. But no other options regarding twitter (mentions, direct messages, etc.) are available. It may be available on the other “Twitter”, but I never got a chance to see it.
If you want to make a call to any one of your contacts who is online, you have four options, you can make a fring call, a video call, a usual cellular call or a SkypeOut call. Fring call is a voice call which uses your data plan and not voice call plan. So its purely an internet call. For making a video call, you should either have a 3G connection or a WiFi connectivity, it doesn’t work with EDGE, and obviously, a video conferencing camera on your phone.
During a call, you have the usual options such as a loudspeaker, option to record the call, volume control, mute, etc. A timer displays the call duration.
There are four status options, Online, Offline, Busy and Invisible. If you want to see or change your profile, you can tap on the profile button and opens up your profile window.
Some of the other options which fring gives you are as shown in the following screenshot.
