Okay, so we fully understand that it would make life a lot easier on AT&T if every smartphone on its network used the same operating system, but we’re not so sure we like the idea of losing the whole “ability to choose.” Speaking at the Symbian Partner Event in San Francisco, AT&T’s Roger Smith (director of next generation services, data product realization at AT&T) reportedly stated that he wanted to “standardize on a single operating system for AT&T-branded smartphones as part of a dramatic consolidation of its mobile platforms over the next few years.” Given the location of the speech, it’s no shock that Symbian was named “a very credible and likely candidate” to be that system, and for those questioning the iPhone, he was quick to point out that said mobile is simply a third-party device tapping into AT&T’s technologies. Honestly, we’re not sure how to take this seriously — is he really saying he’s willing to alienate RIM and / or Microsoft in order to only sell Symbian-based handsets? Doubtful.

We promise to stop slobbering all over this handset in a month or eight, but the N97 is certainly the new hotness, so we hope you’ll excuse us for returning for another go and getting some more in-depth hands-on-ness. Unfortunately, while the phone is certainly stunning in many facets, and probably the greatest S60 device to date, we’re not sure it’s the Storm / G1 / iPhone / anything killer we all might’ve been hoping for. Having purchased a new S60 smartphone one may consider installing new software on it to widen the functionality and increase phone’s potential. In this article I will describe some popular applications for S60 smartphones which are essential for everyday usage.

First of all I installed music player. The best one I tried was PowerMP3, it has the best audio quality and less bugs than others. PowerMP3 supports MP3, OGG, AAC and M4A formats. Another good music player is UltraMP3.

You may also need a good file manager to explore your phone memory, send, receive and organize your files, because the default one is quite useless. I can recommend ProfiExplorer by Lonely Cat Games and FExplorer by Gosymbian, which one you like more.

Having a calculator is rather useful if you have to do some math. I use Nicecalc, it is very simple yet powerful.

If you take care of your phone security you may consider the Guardian.

If your phone is lost or stolen and the new owner inserts new SIM card then your phone will stealthy send you a message with new phone number so that you could contact that person and try to get your phone back.

If you have a memory card of high capacity you can load some movies and watch them on your phone with the SmartMovie application.

You can stay online everywhere using the stICQ software. It is reliable and handy and consumes a little traffic.

And as the last but not the least I recommend you the freeware mobile web-browser Opera Mini written in Java.

Nokia’s aging N95 has gotten an early holiday gift in the form of a firmware update bringing it up to v31. Aside from being one “vee” higher, mum’s the word on what exactly is getting overhauled with this massive 140MB update. So if you’re sitting on an N95 and feel inspired to drop us a line with your update observations, we’d welcome the info. Though, remember, all manner of things can go wrong while performing firmware surgery, so please back up your goods before getting to work.

Update: Seems the N85 getting the same update treatment as the N95 with a v11 refresh. Items addressed include key handling for missed keys — telepathy improvements, maybe? — short and long presses on the hotkeys, various power handling tweaks, and various issues with video calling.

Gartner’s latest and greatest analysis of the global smartphone industry is in, and there are quite a few interesting nuggets tucked within all those percentages. For starters, the sector still managed to grow 11.5% in Q3 2008 compared to a year prior, but that increase is the smallest since it began tracking. Of course, given the current economic climate, we’d say it’s a win to see any number not in the negative. Moving on, we see Nokia maintaining its numero uno status with 42.4% market share, though it did recognize a rare decline in sales of 3% year-on-year; as for RIM, its BlackBerry phone sales increased an amazing 81.7% in Q3. We’re also clued in to why Apple was rumored to be hacking its iPhone production some 40% in Q4, as the company has some two million units of inventory built up in the supply channel. Finally, we’re told that “for the first time (meaning in this quarter), iPhone sales exceeded sales of Microsoft Windows Mobile devices worldwide and in North America,” and beyond that, “open-source initiatives like Android and Symbian Foundation [are set to] challenge Windows Mobile’s licensing model in the short-term.” Need we really reiterate how badly WinMo 7 is needed?

We’re coming right up on a year since we first heard of the 2605’s existence, and with a VGA camera just about the most interesting feature we can find on the spec sheet, we’re having a hard time saying with a straight face that it was worth the wait. Be that as it may, the unassuming flip is still on a very, very short list of CDMA Nokias sold in the US, which in itself makes it sorta interesting — and your hard-earned .99 on contract after rebate is going to nab you Bluetooth, a color external display, VZ Navigator support, and Xpress-on changeable covers (when’s the last time you owned an Xpress-on Nokia, eh?). It’ll be available for order from Verizon’s site, telesales, and stores starting Friday, with all sales channels opening the floodgates come January 23 of next year.

To anyone even remotely familiar with Nokia’s history, this tidbit won’t come as a surprise at all. In fact, we’ve been hearing “Linux” and “Nokia” in the same sentence for years. At Nokia World in Barcelona — the same place where the almighty N97 (pictured) was unveiled — Ukko Lappalainen, vice president at Nokia’s markets unit, informed Reuters that “in the longer perspective, Linux will become a serious alternative for our high-end phones.” Potentially more interesting was his followup line: “I don’t see anything in Android which would make it better than Linux maemo.” Quite frankly, we’d be entirely more interested if this was some revolutionary epiphany, but it’s basically just more of the same song and dance. Now, if an N98 pops out next month with a freakishly awesome and nimble mobile variant of Ubuntu, well — that’s a horse of a different color.
