The advent of smartphones has totally revolutionized the way people manage their address books. Gone are the days of leather bound address books updated periodically for now they are replaced with address books in digital formats stored either on PC/Macs and or smartphones.

That’s where ABBYY’s Business Card Reader for Nokia smartphones pitches in: ABBYY’s revolutionary OCR has been superbly implemented to read and store data from business cards directly in Symbian contacts. Seems like the developers of ABBYY BCR believe in keeping things simple as can be seen from their no frills interface which oozes out simplicity and user-friendliness in omni directions. All you gotta do after opening the app is to focus the camera such that business card lies within the margins indicated in the homescreen. Once the business card has been positioned appropriately, getting the contact info is only as far away as clicking on the capture button!
The second screenshot (the one on the right) shows the captured contact info. The app highlights the characters that it is not sure of in pink, allowing the users to edit and save the right information. However, we found that the OCR is accurate 8/10 times, having tested it with around 25 business cards. That’s by all means a commendable feat and we raise our hat to the developers of this amazing app.

What we like?
1. No-frills interface
2. Amazing accuracy of OCR
3. Ability to add photos without exiting the app
4. Almost all the details on the business card are captured and stored in contacts (including names, qualifications, address, webpages and all contact numbers)
What we don’t like?
1. OCR accuracy reduces drastically for business cards with unconventional designs (wish there was a standard code for business card templates).
Verdict
Our 5800 is an amazing piece of hardware and given the right software components can function as a reliable personal assistant. The latest app from ABBYY is another illustration of the capability of our 5800. We seldom see an application that utilizes the hardware and software features of the phone in such seamless manner. We definitely think this one of the top apps for 5800 and a must for every 5800er.
The price tag of $24.95 may keep some 5800ers from this app but take our word on it, that’s money well spent, considering the capability and usability of this amazing app. As always there is a free trial as well.
