Nokia Fever

eyeSight, the innovative Symbian developers who are hell bent on not letting us tap on our touchscreen symbian phones, have launched another one of theirs interactive games for 5800s- Interactive Christmas Card.

If you recall eyeCall, which we covered earlier this year: it offered a touch-free interface to answer/reject incoming calls using the front facing camera of the 5800s. This time around the folks at eyeSight have moved to the higher resolution rear camera and merged it a control unit for their christmas themed game-Interactive Christmas Card. The name is kinda misnomer for there is no actual christmas card for you to forward to your friend or anything, but nevertheless its still fun to play.  Before you rush to get this app for free from the ovi store, take a look at screenshots and our brief review, after the break.

You must be wondering what’s Santa gotta do with a walking stick? But then eyeSight give you a reason to relate the two: you gotta throw the stick in Santa’s empty gift compartment, which will reveal all the hidden gifts from the compartment! We said no touch-based UI right? Yeah we did and we haven’t told you yet how to throw the stick, so there’s the catch! You gotta flick your arm in a “frisbie release” like action in front of the hind camera, for the game to recognise your act of throwing.

What we like?

1. Innovative use of camera as a control unit
2. Neat Graphics and audio effects

What we don’t like?

1. Limited game scope. Tends to get boring after a couple of trials
2. The action recognition algorithm is not that robust (many a times our actions were not detected)

Verdict

Interactive Christmas Card is an interesting concept for a game on the mobile platform. eyeSight have managed to integrate their innovative non-touch based UI into another innovative game and by adding in the christmas flavour are looking into attract more gamers to this new concept of mobile gaming. While the game as such is not high on entertainment quotient, its bound to generate a lot of excitement with its camera based and if you wanted to boast motion-sensor based gaming controls. We would definitely give it a “must-try” and not “must-have” for a couple of reasons we highlighted earlier.
